It’s not often that a fashion or style trend emerges from the realm of Maltese politics. There have of course been notable exceptions throughout history. Grand Master Jean de la Valette’s penchant for fishnet stockings and hedgehog fur hats was widely imitated by nobles and peasants alike. In the 1980s, Agatha Barbara was the first to tie pink ribbons to her chest hair, a trend copied by Margaret Thatcher, and now by Angela Merkel.
But the 21st century requires something more. It requires something big, and furry. Step forward, the Emanuel Delia Beard, facial hair pioneered by the man in charge of designing Malta’s new bus routes, Emanuel Delia.
Stylish yet practical, the MDB is ideal for making your face look 30 per cent fatter than it already is. It’s also great for catching stray pastizzi crumbs that can then be saved for later in the day, and for storing pens and paper used to correct illogical bus routes.
The Beard is already proving to be a massive hit in political circles, and will probably go mainstream by the beginning of next year.
